Why We Built Synapse: The Utility Layer for macOS

It started with a simple observation: our MacBooks were running hot, our batteries were draining fast, and our menu bars looked like chaotic train stations.

As developers and designers, we rely heavily on small utility apps to get through our day. We need to keep our screens awake while rendering. We need a robust clipboard manager for coding. We take dozens of screenshots daily that need annotations. But the software ecosystem had a major problem.

The Problem: App Fatigue and Electron Bloat

To solve these simple problems, the market offered single-feature apps. Over time, we found ourselves installing:

  • One app to manage clipboard history.
  • One app to keep the Mac awake.
  • One app to take and annotate screenshots.
  • One app to hold files temporarily.

Worse, many of these "lightweight" tools were built using Electron—essentially running an entire Google Chrome browser in the background just to display a simple menu. Running four of these simultaneously was eating up gigabytes of RAM. And let's not even talk about paying four different monthly subscriptions for basic system functions.

The Vision: A Single "Utility Layer"

We realized that these aren't isolated features; they are all fundamentally about workflow friction. They shouldn't be separate applications. They should be integrated deeply into the operating system as a single "Utility Layer."

That is when we decided to build Synapse.

Native by Design

From day one, we made a strict technical decision: Synapse would be 100% native. Written specifically for macOS, leveraging native Apple APIs. No Electron, no web-wrappers.

The result? An application that offers a massive suite of tools—Snipping, Annotation, Clipboard Management, Keep Awake, and Notch Shelf—all packed into an incredibly tiny sub-3MB file. It uses virtually zero CPU when idle and minimal RAM, ensuring your Mac stays fast and cold.

No Subscriptions. Just Value.

We also wanted to fix the pricing model. We are tired of renting software. That's why we committed to offering Synapse with a straightforward Free tier for basic users, and a one-time Lifetime payment option for Power Users who want the pro features.

Looking Forward

Synapse 2.0 is just the beginning. We recently introduced Modular Features, allowing you to completely disable the parts of Synapse you don't use, saving even more system resources. We are continually listening to our community on Discord to build exactly what Mac users actually need.
